End of a Superstar Maker - Prakash Mehra

Prakash Mehra is one of the best Bollywood Producer and Director. He is one who gives Bollywood many super hit films. Prakash Mehra passed away on Sunday, May 17th, 2009 in the morning at the Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri, Mumbai due to pneumonia and multiple organ failure at 07.50 hours. He was 69 years old.

Prakash Mehra was born on 13 July, 1939 in Bijnaur, Uttar Pradesh, India. In 1973, Mehra produced and directed Zanjeer, which was mega blockbuster with Big B and gives born to Superstar of Bollywood.


Mehra had begun his career as a production controller in the late 50s and turned director with the musical super hit Haseena Man Jaayegi (1968) starring Shashi Kapoor. This was followed by the 1971 hit ‘Mela’ starring the khan brothers Feroz Khan and Sanjay Khan together. With his Zanjeer (1973) Mehra's association began with the Big B. This Mega blockbuster with Amitabh Bachchan started a relationship that spanned seven more films. Most notable of them being Hera Pheri (1976), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), Laawaris (1981), Namak Halal (1982) and of course Sharaabi (1984). However their last film together Jaadugar (1989) was a big flop.

In mid-90s, he produced “Dalal” with Mithun Daa, which was super hit. Prakash Mehra also directed & produced Zindagi Ek Jua with actor Anil Kapoor in 1992. In 1996 he introduced veteran actor Raaj Kumar’s son Puru Raajkumar in ‘Bal Brahmachari’. These both films not a commercial success. It was the last film he directed. His last produced film was the Rekha starrer Mujhe Meri Biwi Se Bachao (2001).

Mr. Mehra had received a lifetime achievement award from the India Motion Picture Directors Association (IMPDA) in 2006. He had also received Lifetime Achievement as Producer from IMPAA (Indian Motion Picture Producers Association) on September 19, 2008.
